But the fact is, the island nation has suffered from poverty, malnutrition, and high food prices long before any hurricane or quake. Here are ten hunger facts about Haiti.
2. Even before the earthquake, nearly two million people were ‘food insecure’, meaning they needed assistance to stave off hunger.
3. Only fifty percent of the Haiti population has access to safe drinking water.
6. Chronic malnutrition affects twenty four percent of children under five, rising as high as forty percent in the poorest regions.
