10 signs that religion has turned evil

Daniel B. Clendenin has published a list of ten warning signs that religion has turned evil. For example, “fanatical claims of absolute truth,” “identifying the Gospel with nationalistic ideologies,” and “blind obedience to totalitarian, charismatic, and authoritarian leaders.” Heavy, important reading if you’re interested in religion.

Problem is to much focus on the 'religion' as institutions. I am a Christian and my focus is on Jesus. Really don't like seeing Christianty lumped into a 'religion' when true Christianity is not and it certaintly could never, ever become something evil.

This article should have been named '10 signs that Christianity has turned evil'. While I don't necessarily share all the authors views, I think he should have at least had the courage to name it correctly, since he is exclusively talking about the Christian religion.

It is when Atheists create a law so you can't look upon a Crucifix in your own country that one should ask which side is evil on?

Rose, with respect, most people have been killed in the name of Christianity than by a lot of other means. We can argue that this isn't "true Christianity" and I might even agree with your argument. But Christianity is most definitely a religion so it doesn't get a free pass.

With respect, people may have been killed in the NAME of Christianity but they were not killed by true followers of Christ. Evil comes in many different forms, some in the form of religious robes.

From these comments, i expected to see a secular article complaining about american christianity politics, but this is on the "journey with jesus" blog. Religion is the institutional version of faith, if you dont have faith in the institution to be right, then can your really have faith? you just end up having faith in your own interpritation, which is really just faith *in yourself*. But that wouldn't make anyone rich. Full disclosure - I may be what some consider an atheist

Getting back to the title "10 signs that religion has turned evil": That is quite true with certain religions that advocate to burn Christians in the name of God as occurred a few months ago. There is no "God" in religions that blow up others because they see things in a different way. Religion is goodness, not an absence of it. If there is an absence of goodness in a religion then it is no longer a religion but evilness pure and simple- in that case remember to take God out of it- since he has already been forcibly kicked out from such.

"most people have been killed in the name of Christianity than by a lot of other means. " Most people were taught, how to read, were clothed, fed, healed and comforted, than by a lot of other means. Further, Christianity is not a religion. It is a Church.

My dear Andrew if you look up the word Christianity in the dictionary it will define it for you. I'd better post it here so you don't have to bother to look it up. "Christianity is a religion based on the teachings of Jesus Christ"... It is also a church- in fact many churches and really I don't think you can separate one from the other. I also think you have overlooked the fact that around the middle ages the non Christian religions destroyed the world's civilization in the East and most of its inhabitants including the Hindu in India- Furthermore you seem to forget that China is full of incarcerated Christians. Are Christians just to stand back and let it happen- have Christians no right to defend themselves, and why are Christians still burned alive today?

A statement that includes a title such as this ("Religion has turned evil") is inherently false. All religion everywhere has turned evil? really? That said, this article brings up a valuable lesson in the humanities: 1. The tendency to form a general idea from a few isolated experiences (especially when they are negative) 2. The concept of a cultural pendulum: It seems en vogue right now to bash "religion". A few hundred years ago, in the English speaking world, Christianity was all the rage. It even trumped scientific discovery. Some correctioin was warranted, I agree. But let's just recognize this phenomena for what it is right now...a pendulum swing. It is an overcompensation of some previous need for correction. I propose a corrected title for this article: "Some People Applied Religion In an Evil Way"...perhaps not as catchy...but at least it's true.

Don't be silly. All religions have always been evil. They are an effective method of creating blind obedience from the many, to put power and wealth in the hands of the few. Anyone who doesn't toe the line is blackmailed with social ostracism, or bribed to promises of a non-existent nirvana. Join the one true religion by believing in the trinity - Father Christmas, the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny!
