3. think.com (5/24/1985)

5. dec.com (9/30/1985)
6. northrop.com (11/7/1985)
7. xerox.com (1/9/1986)
8. sri.com (1/17/1986)

Unless I missed it, Microsoft aren't on the list. Sun, IBM, Apple, Intel, AMD are all there, but not MS. Kind of confirms the idea that they really didn't 'get' the internet until quite late on.

Ummm...

The top ones like bbn and dec existed long before the Internet as >>you<<< know it as born.

Remember the 'birth' of the Internet was political.
It is the arpanet with a new silly name "Internet" created in 1984-85.

I've connected to dec, bbn, MIT and many others since 1976
and they were around long before then. I was a late comer.

It's cool that some o the domains are still current, like dec and bbn.

Hmmm - Like Wayne, I too remember connecting to DEC & using (external & internal) email W-A-Y before 1985. Also, ftp'ing to White Sands Missile Base to download stuff for both VMS and Ultrix, then later for the PC (in the process giving my Dad an apoplectic fit when he read the FTP header - he'd seen the film "War Games" when it came out in 1983!)

It is nice to see that the domain is still there and although I already knew that DEC was a very early domain entry (like, in the first 100 or so (?), but maybe that was out of ALL domains incl .edu) I never realised, or checked previously, just exactly HOW early. Number 5! Now that sounds more like bleeding edge to me.

Interesting that bellcore was only #10 and IBM nowhere to be seen either.

Let's hope HP continue to keep the domain active eh?

Thanks for your blog.
I had the huge pleasure working for both #1 and #5.

WOW ! Time flew when we were havin fun! I look back to some of DEC's products and services and how they've been reborn by other brands today ... Like All-in-One and the "pizzabox PC". My hinote VP laptop wasn't much bigger than today's netbooks.
