12 ridiculously costumed Olympic fans
Forget the face paint. These spectators take national pride to new heights with gaudy, sometimes inexplicable, full-body attire
Captain America
While Olympians battle for medals on the ground, spectators go head-to-head in the stands for the title of Most Enthusiastic Fan. These extroverts are often decked out in full costumes, like this fervent young Captain America who showed up to encourage the U.S. women’s soccer team in its game against Canada Aug. 6.
Luck of the Irish
Leprechaun themes. Red-haired wigs. And no shortage of green. These Irish fans — in the stands at the men’s kayak single semi-final Aug. 1 — clearly have no problems with cultural stereotypes.
Blue with excitement
Uruguay fans donning Smurf-blue faux-bearskin caps cheer during the first round men’s soccer Group A match against Great Britain Aug. 1. Despite their enthusiasm, the Uruguay team failed to advance.
