The 16-year-old Southern California girl who set sail in January for a solo trip around the world could be in danger after her boat’s emergency beacons signaled and communications dropped. Abby Sunderland reported 30-foot swells at 4 a.m. PDT as she navigated the choppy Indian Ocean waters between southern Africa and Australia, but was reportedly not in distress at the time.
A source close to the family said rescue efforts were underway in conjunction with the U.S. State Department, U.S. Coast Guard, and various international rescue organizations.
Update: A resuce plane has spotted Sunderland and reports she is alive and well. A rescue boat will reportedly arrive within 24 hours to pick up the teen.
