5 good reasons to buy a hybrid vehicle

Do you do a lot of city driving and want to stretch out your gas mileage numbers in between spotlights? Maybe you’re looking for a more environmentally friendly set of wheels? Or perhaps you’re the not-so-proud owner of a lemon, and simply need a new automobile. Whatever your reason for looking—here are five reasons you might want to consider purchasing a hybrid vehicle, including:

1. Yes, hybrid cars are generally priced higher than regular cars. But, many automakers are pushing to produce more affordable hybrids for drivers looking to take the plunge. For example, the Toyota Prius is the least expensive hybrid available, priced at $21,500, for the basic model. The newest version, the 2010 Toyota Prius is only slightly more expensive, at $22,000.

2. Improved technology. It’s true that in their early days, a cloud of confusion swirled around the debate as to whether or not a hybrid car was a reliable choice for a driver. But most of those myths have been debunked or clarified, and today, practically every hybrid-producing car company guarantees its hybrid batteries for the life of the car—and will replace the battery pack free of charge if there are any problems.

All the latest auto news for all you gear heads.

5 reasons not to buy a hybrid. 1. Mining the raw material to make the batteries is killing hundreds of acres of Canadian forests. 2. Hybrid drivers drive twice as much as SUV owners, burning the same amount of gas and creating the same amount of greenhouse gases. 3. It takes 10 years to restore the cost to the environment of manufacturing a hybrid, and 5 years to restore the cost of an SUV. 4. SUV owners are more likely to bike to work and take public transport because of the cost of gasoline. 5. There are at least 25 non-hybrid cars on the market with better gas mileage than the most efficient hybrid.

Lou, that is propaganda BS - nothing you said is accurate - check your facts. Those photos of the canadian forest due to nickel mining came way before hybrids came along - most of the nickel used in these batteries is recycled, how do you calculate that SUV owners drive twice as much as SUV owners, that is complete bull - my 2005 Prius has 35,000 miles on it, SUV owners are more likely to use a bike? Highly doubtful, I know lots of hybrid owners that LOVE to bike to work because they know its good excercise and better for the environment - I was in Houston last week and couldn't believe all the fat slobs driving to work in SUVs, name your 25 cars, are they mopeds? You are comparing Apple's and Oranges, a Prius is MUCH bigger than say a YARIS (and btw it STILL gets better gas mileage - tell me what car the size of the Prius gets anywhere close to 51mpg!!!). Try again.

@David - there are many clean diesel powered cars currently available in Europe that have higher mileage ratings. We are just starting to see the wave of these vehicles cross the pond, although none of the clean diesels currently are more fuel efficient then the Prius.

My Focus gets about 350km to tank of about 43 Litres, 480km in summer when I can avoid traffic earlier in the day.

The new Focus is supposedly twice as good on gas, without a hybrid.

Hybrids are expensive, demand is high, availability is low.

I do not drive an SUV, I'd be broke in a month

I have a bike, I will not Bike 40km of hills

Work has free parking

Transit is not good enough for our office's area of the city

My car still needs a tuneup I can't afford.

Buy a hybrid? I'm sure you have the money to just get one, its not that easy for me. 2 pays a month pay mortgage and bills, with almost nothing left over. If not for hydro/water being every two months, I'd probably never have money.

A Hybrid can save me money, but it takes a lot longer to get the money back.

All this talk of hybrid cars...for heaven's sakes. We only live once>>>stop being followers...everybody seems to jump on the pretext of being "in"...buy what you like, instead of those celebs dictating to your minds.

Hill come on. Some people including myself LOVE driving their Prius's , in fact pick up consumer reports, it has the highest customer satisfaction of ANY car! No compromises, it's a great great vehicle. I mean j bought mine in 2005 and I didn't know of any celebrities owning one at the time, that would have zero influence on me. Why does everyone assume people buy them to be "in". F#*£€* that, you buy it because it's a great car that also gets great gas mileage and has very exciting technology, much of which will be incorporates in every car in the future, including yours.

No compromises in a Prius? Wow. The Prius is about near the bottom of cars I'd choose to own. I'd take a Jetta TDI anyday. Someone forgot to put "fun" in the Prius
