50,000 birthdays and one very sad ending [video]
Posted by staff / June 7, 2011When Robert Krulwich of NPR did a piece on octopus mothers giving birth to 50,000 babies at once, he never dreamed that he would soon be getting a video of the actual event from a reader, but that’s exactly what happened.
Laurynn Evans discovered an octopus on the verge of hatching her braids of eggs while diving near her home in West Seattle and decided to document the event with some friends. While the cloud of tiny octopuses is almost deliriously joyous, the moment is bittersweet; you see, the animal only has one cache of eggs and the energy she expends caring for them spells her demise.
