71% of tweets produce no reaction

If Twitter makes you feel like you’re talking to a wall, take comfort in knowing that feeling resonates with nearly three-quarters of the 140-charactersphere. According to social media analysis tool maker Sysomos, a full 71 percent of tweets elicit no retweets or replies. Ouch.

Other tweet stat tidbits from Sysomos' analysis of 1.2 billion tweets posted over a two month period:

Only 6 percent of tweets garner a retweet.
23 percent of tweet get an @ reply.
96.9% of replies and 92.4% of retweets occur within an hour of the original post.

Feel better about getting zip, zero, zilch reactions to your chuckle-worthy insight on breakfast cereal?

Those figures sound about right. And it CAN make Twittering discouraging. But still... there is no doubt that it DOES work as a tool to establish good business relationships. Patience is required, thassall!

This probably means there's too much noise on Twitter, and not enough value. Perhaps we should all do a better job self-censoring our Twitter impulses. What if we just didn't post the next time we're inclined to do -- then the remaining three posts would be more effective,

I've been pleasantly surprised, actually, at how many people have read and remembered things (and I find out about it later in real life) that I thought nobody responded to because there was no immediate retweet or response. I think those things aren't always a good sign of what is being paid attention to specifically unless you are part of a group of friends that does that a lot.

I believe that twitter is not a very effective way to socialize as an Individual. Business and individuals using it for professional advantage is for real but people tweeting about what are they eating and doing...is just noise. Most of these tweets go unnoticed. You need to have you followers be online at the time you are tweeting else your tweet will be buried under that huge timeline. If you are Guy Kawasaki (read alltop) then you will surely go back in timeline (say 4 hours) and read what he tweeted. But again, compared to the number of tweets Guy tweeted those 2 hours tweets are nothing. Still we can say that people read those tweets...well yeah...that's why I said that it is good to business people who are tweeting and re-tweeting their tweets. But, for individuals...no one is going back to read what you did 3 hours ago. And, similarly people unfollow tweeters who tweet every second of their life. So, the number of tweets posted is much much more in comparison to what people read...appropriately saying - want to read. So, the ratios grows.

Forrester Research, that carried out the study, classifies social networking users into seven categories--Creators, Conversationalists, Critics, Collectors, Joiners, Spectators and Inactives. There should be another category that should be added to the list--Skeptics.

While Creators, Conversationalists, and Critics can be further classified as active users as they participate in creating some form of content either by commenting on a tweet or replying or retweeting. But the remaining users, Collectors, Joiners, Spectators, Conversationalists can be labeled as passive users as they seldom engage in any tweetivity (twitter+activity). Skeptics are the ones that blur the lines between active and passive users. On one hand, such users doubt Twitter as a source of credible information and keep away from participating, but on the other hand, these users may also engage in Twitter time discussions, mostly to convey their skepticism of Twitter.

Thus, reading that 71% of tweets produce no reaction, makes one think about the quality, content, and relevance of those tweets enough to pique the interest of Creators, Conversationalists, and Critics.

I think sometimes it's a culture thing as well, many people interact only when people address something directly at them. If we have statistics on reply % for tweets that are mentions then the response % will be higher. I agree with Rob on his comment that many people read and remember but don't respond on twitter for multiple reasons main one being that they feel it's not specifically addressed to them.
