9 cool facts about snowflakes

Posted by / November 26, 2014

And from SnowBrains we have 9 cool facts about snowflakes including a Montana snowflake that’s on record as having been the world’s largest. It supposedly measured 15 inches across and 8 inches thick and was sighted in 1887.

Now, this website pre-dates the epic snowfall last week in Buffalo, but until then the most snow recorded as having fallen in a 24 hour period was in Colorado in 1921 (76″). I’m not sure what Buffalo’s final tally is? I have a feeling it was more than 76″.

As for a seasons-worth, that record goes to Mt. Baker in Washington state and it’s a recent one: They got 1,140 inches of snow in the 1998/1999 winter season.

105 snowstorms a year. That’s what the USA averages. That’s a lot of snow.
