‘Acoustic smog’ drowns out whale chatter
Critically endangered Northern Atlantic right whales can’t hear each other over the noise of commercial ships, say researchers.
“We had already shown that the noise from an individual ship could make it nearly impossible for a right whale to be heard by other whales,” says co-author Christopher Clark, director of Cornell University’s bioacoustics research program.
