Anonymous street artist wins 2011 TED Prize
A 27-year-old anonymous street artist and photographer from Paris has nabbed the 2011 TED Prize, and the $100,000 that comes with the distinction. Known simply as JR, the spotlight-shy artist posts massive portraits of local people in neighborhoods around the world. JR’s knack for capturing the spirit of a community through the camera lens has earned him praise and a loyal fan base.
From TED:
JR exhibits his photographs in the biggest art gallery on the planet. His work is presented freely in the streets of the world, catching the attention of people who are not museum visitors. His work mixes Art and Action; it talks about commitment, freedom, identity and limit.
