Better weight loss with before-breakfast workouts

The New Year often ushers in resolutions to lose the holiday pounds and then some, so research out of Belgium should come as welcome tidings to future dieters.

When scientists had twenty-eight men consume a diet of fifty percent fat, then divided them into groups of non-exercisers, those who exercised after breakfast and those who exercised before, they were surprised to find that while those who broke a sweat after they broke the fast didn’t gain any weight, the ones who waited to chow down lost three pounds over six weeks.

While three pounds may not provide enough incentive to keep up those workouts after January for many, by bikini (or Speedo) season, your buns will thank you.

Should be no surprise here, the research is still a little inconclusive but (speaking from experience) the workout before breakfast without anything in your system does appear to accelerate fat loss. The reason most commonly attributed is that your body is drained of glycogen (essentially stored sugar), a significant source of energy during workouts, when you first wake up. So the logic was that your body has to immediately move to other forms of stored energy to fuel your workout, namely fat.

Again, I've seen this batted back and forth for a long time but in my own experiments I definitely trimmed down faster and was more energized the rest of the day when I worked out before eating anything.

Interesting research but I guess whether it is before or after, as long as you are doing something every day, it all produces results.
