Booming black market for JAL flight attendant uniforms
Despite filing for bankruptcy and embarrassing an entire nation, one thing about Japan Airlines remains immensely popular: its flight attendant uniforms. Popular with fetishists, genuine versions of the gray and red no-nonsense outfits can fetch for thousands of dollars on the black market.
Keen to the uniforms’ underground popularity, JAL has taken steps to ensure individuals return the garment after leaving the company, going so far as to sew computer chips into the fabric. The airline also scans auction sites and recently dropped $2,800 on a JAL uniform up for bid.
If JAL is so hard up for cash, why not open a side business of selling uniforms? Airline industry problems: solved.
