In 1626, the Dutch purchased an island from Native Americans in exchange for trade goods worth anywhere from $24 to $1000 (depending on whose calculation you trust). That chunk of land went on to become the thriving metropolis of Manhattan and the story of how the island exchanged hands became legend. A 1962 cartoon from the mind of Saul Bass that aired on the TV show “Stan Freberg Presents The Chun King Chow Mein Hour” illustrates the deal.
