Cold temps further endanger Florida’s manatees
The extremely cold weather sweeping across the continental US has disrupted business, travel, and lives; including the endangered manatees in Florida. A record 280 manatee have died in 2010 and marine biologist fear this is only the beginning.
Andy Garrett of Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said that he’s never seen anything like this. Garrett explained that mantee cannot handle water temperatures below 68 degrees. Florida waters have been in the 40s.
