Day 5: Vancouver Winter Olympics
Today was more “tourist” then “sports fan.” Our first stop was a tour of woodworker Brent Comber’s studio.
A tree stump that he will turn into furniture.
This is how he removes moisture from the wood by storing it in a room with a demhudifier. Water from the wood drips out the hose into the bucket.
Here’s Brent with some of his work in progress. I would love to redo our whole house with his stuff.
Canadians have big balls.
Sitting with Brent in front of one of his dramatic pieces.
Next stop: Tim Hortons
Then to Seymour Reservoir.
Notice the two call boxes at two heights: one for cars and one for trucks.
Then we went to the Seymour River Hatchery. This organization is trying to restore the salmon and trout stocks to the level prior to the construction of the Seymour Falls dam.
A is the dam. B is the hatchery.
True outhouses.
Coho-egg room.
Tower for aerating water.
“Dirty Jobs” with Guy Kawasaki.
Against my better judgment, I agreed to “help” them check some steelhead trout to see if their eggs are ready for harvesting. This is the coldest water I’ve ever gotten into voluntarily.
Then we caught the Seabus from North Vancouver back to Vancouver.
It was boat day: this is the inside of a water taxi to Granville Island.
Granville Island is like a big Mercat de la Boqueria.
Eyeland had this very clever stand outside its store. I loved an eyeglass frame there, but it was just too expensive. If Alltop is successful, I’m going back there to buy it.
A little roller hockey on the West End.
Last stop of the day: visiting my buddies at Bootup Labs.
Thanks to Jim Anholt of Canada’s Pacific Gateway for making this day possible.
