Divorce ban coming to California

Media_httpuploadwikimediaorgwikipediacommons005anillosjpg_opeijbmjhidrbgj

Californians take marriage seriously. Just look at the Golden State’s vote on Prop 8. Proponents of the ban on gay marriage shouted from soap boxes that their vote helped protect the sanctity of marriage, so why not take it one step further?

Sacramento resident John Marcotte wants to build a figurative fortress, reinforced with steel and morality of course, around the institution of marriage by banning divorce. Marcotte and his coalition of marriage defenders have set out to collect 700,000 signatures to land the California Protection of Marriage Act 2010 on the ballot next year.

Learn all about Marcotte’s movement with cheeky articles like “You said ‘Til death do us part.’ You’re not dead yet.” and stand up for marriage by taking rights away from everyone.

Thinking of making a life-long commitment? All about weddings.

Putting people's life experiences in second place to idealized moralizing is a mistake. And making commitment to a relationship a matter of law is a staggeringly bad idea that borders on the delusional. Further, it weakens the very idea that marriage should be about personal commitment between two people building a common vision together. Do supporters of this supremely odd legislation think more people will legally marrying after this, or less?

And as for the patronizing 'you said death us do part' sentiment, in my view assumes a pretty narrow definition of death. The death of a relationship can be just as final, even as two hearts continue beating in a manner that is not for each other. To penalize people for this eventuality goes beyond draconian.

Oh wow, as a Californian fled to Scotland, that is just hilarious. What's happened back home? The commercial seemed like a complete parody, so I can't wait for the real jokes to begin.

Wish I were home to catch more of the debate. While I do agree marriage is taken a bit too lightly these days, I think this campaign has about as much chance as a haggis restaurant in the states.

Keep the funny videos coming though, can't wait to get the Brits' reaction.

Oh man just saw the other video... ok that's definitely a joke, thank goodness. Don't know whose intentions are what, but this is all quite amusing.

That was hilarious. I understand the point. If gay marriage is so bad for marriage then how is divorce not just as bad. Why don't we just ban marriage all together, it is the leading cause of divorce.

It's a sad state of affairs when you can no longer tell satire from policy. :)

OMG I laughed my a** off! Go for it - I'll support it! Hey, if all those "its-not-antigay-its-promarriage-Prop8 supporters want to protect marriage well then by golly let's do just that!

I love that the ad banner that runs under the video is from a divorce lawyer - nice!

Not having gotten married in the state of California, I'll just make sure that my next spouse and I get married out of state, and leave the state to get a divorce if that's needed. I imagine the divorce lawyers will dump a lot of money into fighting this one, but the Mormon's will win like the won the gay marriage fight. When will the Mormon's run out of money?

The #1 cause for divorce is money. Teach couples how to communicate about their finances together and divorce will surely shrink.

Then... less people will get married? I mean, marriage is a big farce nowadays, it's just a very old-fashioned tradition which doesn't make any sense at all and is just a relic from the "good" old days. Why can't we raise children without being married? That works very well, too, IMHO. Just my two cents...

@soMiraculous. So it seems. But, once again, I think it's a sad state of affairs when it's so hard to tell the difference between satire and actual policy-making.

where did they ever come up with the 'divorce has been illegal for 99% of human history' statistic? if I remember my Old Testament even Moses was granting divorces when he was judge and that was what, 3000 years ago...
