Doctors hope for first successful mother-to-daughter uterus transplant

As the old saying goes, “There’s no place like home,” but two Swedish women are taking that saying to the next generation in a most unique fashion after having their first homes transplanted into their own bodies and hoping for the best.

One recipient lost her womb to cervical cancer while the other was born without, so ten surgeons at the University of Gothenburg worked tirelessly over the weekend to take the uteruses of their mothers, which will hopefully give new life via in-vitro fertilization next year.

“We are not going to call it a complete success until this results in children,” said Michael Olausson, one of the Swedish surgeons told The Associated Press.

“That’s the best proof.”

A similar procedure was attempted in 2000 in Saudi Arabia, but a blood clot was discovered before the all-important step of conception could be taken.
