Facebook poised to explode as retail tool
With social media still bursting in popularity, some experts see social commerce reaching its tipping point over the next year, reports the Wall Street Journal. Shopping activity is expected to skyrocket especially on Facebook, which now claims a colossal 500 million on its social networking site.
A recent Altimeter Group survey of 135 top retailers reported that 86 percent of participants were ready to start their social commerce strategy by next year. Meanwhile, last month, Facebook claimed a large majority of Internet time, with 41.1 billion minutes spent on Facebook—for the first time beating Google, which trailed with 39.8 billion minutes, according to comScore.
“It’s inevitable that e-commerce and Facebook will overlap or collide,” said Scott Wingo, Chief Executive of ChannelAdvisor Corp., told the Journal. “Facebook will be a top-three channel for all retailers within two or three years.”
