Great satellite photo of England under snow

You may have heard that Europe is cold and getting lots of snow. The above photo was taken today (Jan. 7, 2010) and shows Great Britain covered in snow. Brrr…

Lot’s more about England.

Only the bottom half is called England - I'm in the top half and there is indeed a lot of snow this year!

Fantastic picture indeed. Do you have any idea which satellite took it?

The title is accurate--the photo does show England covered in snow. The photo also shows Scotland, Wales, and even the Isle of Mann. The body of the post does mention that the photo shows Great Britain.

Like it or not, much of the world thinks of Great Britain as England and writing England is shorter than writing Great Britain. :-)

The satellite photo is from NASA:

What is wrong with you people? All Will was trying to do was show everyone this amazing picture! It's not very often this happens and it looks brilliant. If my 6 year old can appreciate it then why can't you lot instead of picking holes in everything that Will wrote?!?!?!?

And now we know why the weather is acting thus. .... There is an easily discernible fang bearing, bearded, frost deity wrapping himself around East Anglia. An Ice Queen hovers above the Irish sea blowing sub zero air towards the Scottish/English border. And the familiar Winter Irish Setter is sniffing the N.E, coast of Scotland with its icy breath.

This looks almost as cool as in the film The Day After Tomorrow, but we all know that the film compressed the events of about 50 years into 4 days, so things will happen much slower in real life.

Great picture i saw it on the news. And if you want to be flippant, Scotland and Wales even though they have thier own govenments, all policies have to go though WestMinister. Agreed the Republic of Ireland has never been classified as part of the Great British Empire. and if you actually measure landmass England covours alot more.. and has the largest population.
At the end of the day, we have to appreciate this picture for what it is. and that is showing Great Britain, United Kingdom, Is covered in the white stuff, no not coccain I mean snow.

Yes it is a great picture and thank you for posting it. However it does upset me as it is labelled as England. Scottish, welsh and mancs are incredibly patriotic and it’s not surprising that they were upset by this.

The thing that adds injury to insult is that you recognise the fact that a large number of people refer to Great Britain as England and you still decide to reinforce this mistake by titling as you have. To be frank if it was posted as it was due to ignorance then it wouldn’t have bothered me but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Can the post not be changed?

Yes It's shorter to type England than Great Britain but it’s also shorter too type picture of Britain under snow. It’s also the same amount of characters to type picture of Great Britain under snow. Why does it have to be shorter anyway?

In conclusion I don’t think you would post a picture of the U.S.A and give it the title of picture of 13 states of America even although all states are visible. This title is inaccurate.

And other things.

I live in Bridport, about 2 miles northwards of the south coast, (from West Bay) and we've had so little snow it's almost not there. It doesn't show up on this satellite picture though.

I suspect the point Will was making by labelling the picture "England Under Snow! is that it's very rare for the *whole* of England to be affected in this way (Wales because of its high ground, and Scotland being further north, are far more prone to snow in winter than England is). Living in London all her life, my 19 year old daughter has never before experienced this much snow. It's an amazing picture.

Don't worry guys...i'm sure he didn't mean to ignore you!
He obviously knows it's Great Britian as he's written it in the caption. You wouldn't write every state of Australia now would you? Although you may write, 'Ayers Rock under snow', simply because it would be a rarity.
The picture is amazing so stop moaning and admire it for what it is!
Nature at it's best! Just wish i was back in Wales to appreciate it!

If you look carefully at your globe Junloc you will see that much of Canada (and 90%+ of Canadians) lies in "The Great White South" by British and Irish standards.. Dundee in Scotland is at the same latitude as the North of Hudson Bay.

Oh my god you Scots are so pathetic! England makes up 50 million of the UK's 60 million population, we have almost twice the land as you and we have almost all of the big businesses and attractions of the UK so stop your whining and just accept that England has always and always will be the most important place to people looking from other countries. That doesn't mean Scotland is a bad place, just that it isn't as well known!
Now get over it because you wouldn't have half the things you do today without your dear friend England!

Tchah, this isn't just Great Britain, all you parochial people. This is a good part of The British Isles. And I got a throat cleared at me for using that term in Ireland once. "We don't call them that here" I was told gently but firmly, "we call them These Islands". (No, I didn't ask what you're supposed to call them if you happen to be standing in New York or Hong Kong at the time. It was a party and I wanted to have a nice time.)

Jocose pedantry aside, here's hoping we get an equivalently outstanding summer picture, when the whole of ... of ... of the landmass is completely clear of any cloud.

100 degrees F in Perth is extraordinary.

The highest temperature ever recorded in Ireland since 1900 ad was 32.5 decrees C during the blistering summer of1976. (That's Just about 90 degrees F).

The Irish nation nearly melted away in the heat.
