Guys find ultra-skinny chicks less attractive

Bad news for all the ladies who chomped on carrots and chicken broth for dinner: new research out of England reveals that young men prefer “normal” sized women. Not that any woman should ever make their dietary decisions based on what arouses college-aged dudes, but there’s a slight comfort in knowing you have a leg up on the Size 00s of the world.

Researchers asked male students at St. Andrews University to rate the attractiveness and health of female faces and found that women with an average weight rated as the most attractive and healthy. The project’s supervisor, Professor David Perrett, commented on the findings, saying, “In our study, people in the normal weight range were judged healthier and more attractive than under or overweight individuals. This sends a strong message to all the girls out there who believe you have to be underweight to be attractive.”

Healthy is hot!

Am I crazy, or does the lead-in sentence not make sense for this story? I'd think it would be "Bad news for all the ladies who chomped on carrots and chicken broth for dinner ..."

Or, is the author implying that carrot sticks and chicken broth or the diet of the "normal" weight and healthy? Are the size 00s eating, what then ... air?

Makes no sense.

Now if only designers and fashion magazines also preferred "average weight" ladies

This is annoying. I'm "ultra-thin" and I eat like a dude. "Average weight?" My metabolism keeps me from hotness? Lame.

The researchers should be aware that young men evaluate females on the basis of more than facial attractiveness. They can look up the definition of "butterface" in Urban Dictionary to know for sure.

Or maybe they were keeping that part of the study for dessert.

If everyone would go out and buy a case of Dove products maybe the manufacturers that drive the whole fashion machine will start listening - real women RULE!

Bless you for reporting this. Yes, I'm tired of "fashionistas" or "fascistnistas" telling us that we need to be scrawny, hairless, 10-year old boy shapes wearing clothing from a nightmare sci-fi flick. Bring back real women. Ban the brazilian. Ban the chicken legs and caved in chests! Making ultra-skinny the fashion norm is horrific, inhumane to the models and celebs, and ridiculous in a world that is starving!

Personally, I have to wonder about a male who *wants* a scrawny pre-pubescent-looking female. Sounds like latent pedophelia to me, with overtones of control issues. Strong women who can take care of themselves, who are intelligent and healthy, should NOT need to fall under the spell of these horrid fashion schemes. But if we don't speak up, the "media" -- whomever THAT is -- continue to shove it violently in our faces.

OK, rant over... ;-D

Was it really a mystery that girls who look like stick figures are not attractive? And what some of them do to get that thin is even worse.

@web20empire: Try some weight training. That'll put some weight on (muscle).

@AnnieColbert: in your picture you look thin. Model thin. Perhaps this is a compliment. Pehaps it is not. ;-)

@web20empire: you may have a high metabolism but it's likely you still look healthy for your size and build. I think this research points out that the "emaciated" look isn't attractive. I hope it says that.

I think it's important to be happy as well as healthy. If more people simply ate decent food, instead of sugar and salt laden fatty junk, then they'd be a whole lot better for it, and without worrying about counting the calories of every darn item!

As for the title, I have never personally found skinny girls physically attractive; I like to see a girl look like a girl, with curves.
