Holy kaw, I just love that UPS lets you track a package across the world. This is how my MacBook Pro traveled from Shanghai to me.

Can someone do the math for me? Is it actually cheaper to make a MBP in China, then ship it to AK, then KY, then CA, then to your doorstep, than it would be to build it in Cupertino or Kansas City and ship it nationally? Am I missing something? Surely I must be.

@dimplemonkey: let me do the math for you:

Chinese Worker Salary ($5/day) + Corrupt Officials + Big Transportation Cost
<
American Worker Salary (Minimum Wage Laws + What's my Incentive Attitude) + Benefits (Health, Dental, Mental, Maternity Leave, Clean Bathrooms, Rest Area, etc) + Workers Compensation + Insurance Fees + Medicare/Healthcare + Unions Agreements (Breaks, Pensions, Benefits, Overtime Pay, Safety Training, Vacations) + Corporate Taxes + MoreTaxes (City, State, Property) + Political Contributions + Environmental Regulations (Waste, Pollution, Disposal Fees) + Lawsuits (Sexual Harassment, Racial Discrimination, Hiring/Firing Issues, Slip and Fall) + Smaller Transportation Costs

And living in So.IN, I've seen the planes and it is absolutely true ... All packages end up in Louisville at one time or another.

Is that right, a 512GB SSD? I had no idea they had such large capacities these days. Enjoy the machine!

@chinaman:
You've really outlined the global challenge there!

Like Mark Twain said in a "Connecticut Yankee"; it's not how much the worker gets paid, its what that pay will buy in the local economy. And of course the "What's my incentive" attitude comes from watching corporate" leaders" disappearing into the stratosphere with their remuneration, leaving the average worker to clean up the mess on the ground left by the super-rich and those aspiring to be. It's the American way.

I know; let's beat the so-called "Western World" workers and put them all in work camps, so that the current efficiencies of the developing world can be rediscovered in what used to be called the first world.

Or, we could wait a generation or two, when the China & co. "move on up" from developing world to developed, and it makes economic sense globally to have workers fed, housed, clothed, and protected in the workplace, because it's cheaper than the alternative.

Me, I've never liked waiting for "jam tomorrow".
