How sleep deprivation hurts your brain
Think those lost hours of sleep are no big deal? Think again. A new study suggests that the areas of the brain that are impaired from sleep deprivation are the same areas impaired with aging. These affected areas can cause us lto ose our patience and our ability to solve the simplest of problems. It can even trick us into leaving our keys in the fridge.
But one man is working to change this. Todd Maddox, a psychology professor at the Institute for Neuroscience at the University of Texas, is studying what the brain can and can’t accomplish while operating on minimal sleep. And what’s more - he’s looking for ways to improve the brain’s functionality while operating under those circumstances. He aims to improve the quality of work and the potential to do more in high-pressure, minimal rest jobs like those of a fire-fighter or a doctor.
