How to be more productive in the am

Charles Hamilton explains how to improve your productivity by not going online before breakfast. His concept is that if you wake up and “just check your email,” you often get sucked into a de-priotizing sinkhole that screws up the rest of your day.

I can totally relate to what he’s saying. Right now, I should be writing my book, but I’m “clearing the deck” to get to that “perfect time when all I have to do is write.” The problem is that I’ve been trying to reach that perfect state for a year.

Now Charles tries not to leave his computer running overnight. If he has to leave it running, he shuts down his email client, browser, and RSS reader. Interesting ideas—I’m not sure that I have the discipline to do what he recommends.

I have also found that when I check email first thing in the morning, it sends me into a 'reactive' mode and, before I know it, several hours have gone by. I try to resist checking it until after 1:00 p.m., although this is not always possible.

I've given up on the idea that I will some day clear all of the tasks on my list. The best that I can do is prioritize them daily <sigh>.
