How to disable Facebook Places

Media_httpfarm5static_xcwgg

If Facebook’s new Places feature sent up your privacy-conscious red flag, take a moment to disable the location service. By default, the service is set to “Friends Only,” but a couple clicks will shutdown the feature altogether.

Follow these simple instructions:

1. Go to your Facebook account’s “Privacy Settings.”

2. Click “Customize settings” in the “Sharing on Facebook” section.

3. Under “Things I share” click the option box next to “Include me in ‘People Here Now’ after I check in.”

Places also allows your Facebook friends to tag and share your location, even if you already switched off the self-check-in. Users must approve check-in requests from friends, but there’s not a simple “no” option, just “Yes” or “Not Now.” Save yourself the hassle of check-in requests and stalker encounters by disabling the feature with a few preferences switcheroos:

1. Go to your Facebook account’s “Privacy Settings.”

2. Click “Customize settings” in the “Sharing on Facebook” section.

3. Under “Things others share,” locate the option “Friends can check me into Places.”

4. Select “Disable” from the list of options. You have now disabled this feature.
