The biggest things that helped me was 1) slower auto-fetch on emails (work/high volume set to fetch only, personal email set to 1hr), 2) using wifi when possible instead of 3G or Edge, and 3) manually hitting the "turn off the battery-guzzling screen" every time I stop using the phone.

Oh - another biggie I almost forgot. EXIT APPLICATIONS before you put the phone down. Press that big button in the front to get to your home screen. I've found that if I leave something "chatty" running when I lock the screen, like Words With Friends or TweetDeck, it can run my 3GS from 100% to 50% in just a couple of hours.

So a good habit to have when putting your phone down is [Front Button], [Top Button].
