How to master a skill (hint: it requires work)

In an increasingly fast-paced and demanding age, we want to see it all and do it all—and quick. We’ve all seen blog posts or books advertising the idea that they can teach us to master a skill in only a few days. But the only real way to become amazingly great at something goes back to that tired old saying, practice makes perfect.

First, you must learn the skill by reading about it, listening to those who have mastered the skill, and most importantly, by trying your hand at it.

Second, you practice some more. At first, you’ll likely be awful at it. No one picks up an instrument, for instance, and knocks out Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata on their first try.

Generally, it takes a couple of years to truly be great at anything. So prepare yourself for a committment.
