This backfires when an opposition says that the conditions aren't widespread as media goes looking for specific people who are outliers of a situation, like Corliss with a mortgage at 13%, etc.

An example of this are GOP senators accusing the media of showcasing 47-50 million uninsured through individuals who lose their jobs, get illnesses, have to file bankruptcy, etc. "This only happens to a few people." they retort because only a few people are showcased.

There has to be a better way to tell a story about numbers. I don't know what that is, but journalists have to work harder at it.
