How to tweet, according to the Twitter elite

How to master Twitter.

Blogger Gregory Ferenstein recently collected Twitter tips from some of the most popular tweeters who attended the 140 Conference.

He discovered:

1. Tweeting is a full-time job.

2. Promote others more than you promote yourself.

3. Be genuine.

4. Thank every retweet and reply—and consider direct messaging instead of replying or creating a separate account for replies.

5. Don't buy into the idea that you need fancy software.

Not everyone can be @Genuine. That would be crowded.

Now I have a question I must ask: why isn't Guy Kawasaki retweeing others and using a separate account for replies?

I agree Mark and Bilal. I love Guy's tweets and retweet regularly but have never been thanked! Not that I'm bothered, I enjoy reading his tweets, but find it interesting.

Maybe Guy's a robot... sorry, just saw Surrogate. :-)
He wrote me back once and I promptly picked up 40 followers I then lost within a few days. I found it quite funny-haha.
Soooo thank you Guy Kawasaki... for all your Tweeting tips.

I think there's a lot to be said for points 2-4, but if tweeting is a full time job, how does one earn a living, without tweeting about how to get 400 followers each day, get your teeth whitened or make a fortune online? All of these are very fast ways to get yourself unfollowed, so I think there has to be some balance here between social notworking, sorry networking and actually doing some proper work!

Have to agree with Avery, how do you earn a living if you only tweet (earnestly and without spamming) all the time?
