Iceland crowdsourcing constitution
Iceland’s Constitutional Council wants input from the country’s residents on a new governing document and the group has turned to social media for help with facilitating the public’s feedback.
The council published a draft of the current working document online and has asked for input on amendment suggestions through Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, and Twitter. The government officials also broadcast their weekly meetings live on Facebook, a move applauded by many for encouraging transparent government.
“I would like to express my profound awe, gratitude, and jealousy toward the awesome transparency and collective national effort that the people and leaders of Iceland are showcasing in this fantastic process,” commented one Facebook user. “The world can only hope that our leaders look to Iceland as an example.”
A final draft of Iceland’s new constitution will come out by the end of June.
