Imperial cormorants dive surprisingly deep for delish fish [video]
Turns out, the imperial cormorants of South America aren’t just skimming the surface for a quick treat as biologists previously believed, but diving deep for the choicest morsels of the sea.
By attaching a camera to one of the birds, the scientists’ previous estimate of seventy-second dives was blown out of the water when they observed the birds taking three minutes to dive 150 feet to scan the bottom for prey before re-emerging victorious.
