iPhone app saves Oscar-winning film

What to do when the budget runs out right before you’re done shooting what could be an Academy award-winning film? Turn to an iPhone and a two-dollar app, of course. That was the solution for Malik Bendjelloul, director of Searching for Sugar Man.
According to the film’s website:
When we ran out of money I started to use the Super 8-app of my iPhone – the result was almost as good as the real stuff, quite amazing… we did use a crane but we used it very economically, only one single day with two shots. It’s all about where you place those two shots that hopefully gives the film a sense of scope,” Bendjelloul says.
The app was so good, in fact, that he went back and re-filmed some other footage before the film was finished.
Just goes to show a great film doesn’t necessarily need an unlimited budget.
