Women's hysteria. Homosexuality. Narcissism. Fetishism. These are all "conditions" that had at one time or another been included in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (the last two are included in it today). The Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, otherwise known as DSM-IV, is the definitive guide on what could indicate a mental illness. See why it's controversial now?

This podcast transcript debates whether or not Internet addiction should be added to the book. Turns out, people do spend damaging amounts of time on the Internet--but it's not exactly clear whether it is an Internet addiction or a symptom of some other hardship. Read the article here.

The problem is not that adding something to the DSM-IV makes it an official affliction- what we should realize is that there's nothing all too scientific about DSM-IV. That's why the 'disorders' are subject to common sense and/or hysteria, depending on who's in the committee that votes whether or not something should be accepted as a disorder.
