Did you know the leading cause of death & disability for young men under 35 is brain injury? And most of it from xtrme sport? Great to challenge people, sure, but a lot of ppl get injured after seeing things like this and trying them w/out knowing how to train. These are pros - and I watched an amazing video on a PRO who had lost an edge, hit a tree, and nearly toasted himself. Eventually he got back together, but it was a living hell he went through. Brain injury is horrendous, and often leaves people handicapped. Sure, challenge people - TO WEAR HELMETS trying this. It's the LEADING cause of disability. You want to challenge them to that? I just spent 5 months off work from a minor concussion - this isn't a joke.

Useful info.

In February 2005, Hagel and colleagues from Canada published a case-control study in the British Medical Journal comparing 1082 skiers and snowboarders with head or neck injuries with 3295 skiers/boarders without head or neck injuries. They found that wearing a helmet reduced the risk of a head injury overall by 29%. For those who required ambulance transport, wearing a helmet reduced the risk of head injury by 56%. 693 people had head injuries - 69,7% of which were cases of concussion. Those with head injuries were more likely to have been injured as the result of a collision or jump. They found no associations between wearing a helmet and the occurrence of neck injuries.

Sulheim et al from Norway published a case-control study from 8 Norwegian resorts in 2006 to see if helmets might reduce head injury rates. The overall incidence of head injury in this study of 3277 injuries was 17.6%. They found a 53% higher incidence of head injuries amongst snowboarders compared to alpine skiers. Using a helmet reduced the risk of sustaining a head injury by 60% (Odds ratio 0.40, 95% confidence interval 0.3-0.55 for the statisticians amongst you!). They also found a trend towards a lower incidence of neck injuries amongst those wearing a helmet.

A friend's husband used to be pro. He went up once against his better judgement because the film crew loved the light that day. He ended up skiing out on an avalanche. I aksed him about it. "I wouldn't want to do it again". dislocated shoulder, rocks jammed in the roof of his mouth, back, teeth knocked out, but he skiied out. Head injuries are about as much fun as that.

Mary, this is a complete fabrication and anybody with google can figure that out in a heartbeat. It's a really stupid idea to be making up stats in this age where every conceivable statistic is available in under 100 milliseconds.

Cheeseburgers, bees and backyard pools kill thousands of times more people than brain injuries - do the research yourself and please stop making things up.
