Kindle vs iPad: The battle over ebooks

Media_httpfarm3static_eyyni

Could a brawl be brewing between Jeff Bezos and Steve Jobs? Probably not, but with Wednesday’s introduction of Apple’s iPad, many tech industry watchers wonder if the market has room for both gadgets. In debuting the product, Jobs gave a brief shout-out to the Amazon Kindle (which some saw as a backhanded compliment), saying “we’re going to stand on their [Kindle] shoulders for this.”

The iPad announcement included the unveiling of a new bookstore app dubbed iBooks that allows users to purchase and download books directly to the device, a feature that hits directly at Kindle and its ability to download directly from Amazon. A few eagle-eyed iPad reviewers spotted books for as low as $4.99, but it looks like most titles will sell for around $15. Apple also announced partnerships with big publishing houses like Penguin and Simon & Schuster, but noticeably absent was the world’s biggest book publisher, Random House.

So, can the iPad deal a jaw-breaking blow to the Kindle?

Here’s some other interesting takes on the ebook reader battle:

Everything you need to know about the new iPad.

Apple has a flashy form factor, but Amazon has catalog and price. Amazon could write a great Kindle app for iPad. I wonder if Apple would reject it.

I don's see how kindle can resist ! Even in the era Pre-iPad, it wasn't doing that well + it is a mono-task product. Although I think we we're all expecting a bit more from the iPad, the 200$ price diference with the Kindle is more than compensated that all other aplication (and sexy factor).
The question for me is "Will the iPad be an added value as a business tool compared to an MacBook" (nevermind other PC netbooks, that's another discussion)

Well as I've seen iPad presentation yesterday it's a first step. The device is simple as a hardware and that's good. The software needs time to become reasonable.

But I'm sure that the device will make difference in the future. We just don't know what possibilities it has.

What we have seen is the iPad introduced. If it becomes a Kindle killer depends on actual performance when it gets out in the wild. And little things like book availability. This is just step one. -http://filmandcompany.com/blog/?p=382

I thought the whole point of the Kindle's display was to reduce eye strain during reading. Wouldn't the backlit display of the iPad be a step backwards?

The Kindle and the i-pad are not competitors. The prices are too different and the I-pad isn't any good until you spend nearly $800. Anybody that buys an i-pad wants a lot more than an e-book reader. A $400 netbook beats both of them and a GOOD e-book reader should fit in a pocket.

I use an Archos PMA400.

For travel I would consider an IPad, although I'm far from an Apple addict, but not just another gadget like a kindle. At home I prefer to read paper:-)

I've seen some pretty good arguments in favor of the Kindle even though everyone said the iPad would crush it. I'm still leaning in the direction of the iPad but I think Kindle is a better reader.

For obvious reason of just reading ebook, then go for ebook readers like the Kindle Reader. Why go for expensive ipad and overkill features. http://www.latestkindlestore.com
