Kurt Vonnegut’s words of wisdom to a widow
Posted by staff / November 15, 2011In 1989, mother-of-three Marianne Brown lost her husband, leaving her alone to raise the couple’s young children. In dealing with her grief, Marianne randomly thought to send a fan letter to Kurt Vonnegut, thanking him for his books. She says she didn’t expect a reply, but within a month of sending the letter, a note from Vonnegut arrived in the mail.
Marianne shared the letter with Letters of Note, telling the website: “I have always wanted to share his kind words. It meant, and still means, so much to me.”
Transcript:
Dearest Marianne Brown —
It can’t be said often enough, “It is the woman who pays.” The miracle is that so many can and do somehow. I was in love (still am) with a widow with four kids (two not her own). She somehow raised them all on a teeny weeny salary. I told her one time, “I worry about women.” She said, “Don’t.”
Cheers
Kurt Vonnegut
