LHC to shut down for one year of repairs

Media_httpfarm5static_tejwd

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will shut down for up to a year starting at the end of 2011 to address design flaws. The atom smashing machine only recently restarted after fourteen months of dormancy that followed an accident in September 2008. Without proper repairs, the machine won’t be able to handle the high-energy collisions CERN built it for. So, no fix-ie, no smash-ie.

The BBC got it wrong. It's normal for colliders to shut down for a year or more for maintenance and such. Remember, these are high-tech toys, which like some high maintenance women I know, need a lot of servicing between uses.
