What I don't understand is... People have their FaceBook accounts up to date..yet have a seldom used email addresss for their LinkedIn accounts.

LinkedIn should not be used ONLY when you don't have a job.. you should be using it as part of your daily life!

I agree Clyde, I feel people have not grasped it yet as personal marketing tool.

We are long time Google Adword users and have had some relative success there. So we have now been testing LinkedIn with some similar offers and ads. I like the way I can segment in LinkedIn to focus on the key company size and titles for our target market but our click through rate is much lower than with Google. Any advice on how LinkedIn is different and what else we might try to refine our strategy there?

I think it depends on your business. I have tried both LinkedIn and Facebook for advertising and I actually get better results from FB - I was expecting the opposite.

I keep FB and Linkedin separate.
I use FB to keep in touch with my family, college and high school friends and use linkedin for more professional networking, updates and business information.

They serve two distinct purposes. No one in my professional life cares about whether my son got a haircut and no one in my personal life cares that I am giving an invited talk at a conference (other than my mother).

@John, @Terrence, In advertising both "reach" and "frequency" matter. For most audience subsets, presumably fb has a higher frequency because we commonly observe people playing with fb than with linkedin. So keep that in mind while choosing your medium

I think my biggest problem in using LinkedIn is that I don't know how to use it - not in a day to day way. Anyone have any suggestions or suggested reading on the topic?

Interesting sheet! I thnk LinkedIn is like a sniper. It's there and you can expect something from it, but it takes some time before he starts to kill. LinkedIn is slowly but surely expanding features and usability. In the Netherlands, we saw a boom in members last year. I think next step here is more usage. Importing your blog posts, for example, is a very useful new feature. Now we just have to wait for companies to add it to their media mix.

FB is most successful for me as far as leads to my website, however, I am not sure how many of those convert. I will be looking at numbers. LinkedIn is one that does not result in as many leads, however, there is probably a reason for that and I will delve into both and determine the return on both campaign.

I have recently created my Linked In profile and was surprised how easy it was to gain connections. I also like the many forums you can join to begin a dialogue. It definitely is an ideal place for professionals to network.

Has anyone had success leveraging LinkedIn for the European market? In central europe there's advertising with xing.com, but they are display only. I like how fast you can set up linkedin ads, but there's nothing in the promotional material about targeting specific countries. Does anyone know?
