This is what it looks like when 40 military ships and subs sail in close formation [video]

Posted by / July 30, 2016

Knock on wood, we’ll never see this many military ships in an actual military action. But seeing them in the RIMPAC 2016 training exercise sure is impressive.

    AWESOME!!!!!!

The article REALLY needs to list a roster of which type ships are involved. Pretty low impact without listing the actual fire power. How many carriers, how many heavy cruisers, light cruisers, destroyers, frigates, etc., are involved. Maybe they used the same writers that Yahoo hired…which is now going down in flames without a bailout from White Knight Verizon.

  • This sure makes you proud to be an American.

  • Yay?

  • Neil Henry

This would be an excellent time, for the Soviets to launch nuclear warheads… don’tcha think?

  • Sue

Sailing to their doom against the Chinese and Russians.

  • dean knapp

Trying to make it an easy target for Kim’s threatened retaliation?

  • why wont we never see this formation? WW3 is getting closer and closer.

  • Steve Rhodes

Don’t any of the commentors realise that some of those ships are Chinese ?

  • Za

Neil, see the Bikini atomic bomb test Crossroads Baker. USS Saratoga CV-3, faced an underwater explosion of 23kT 370m away. There is an impressive photo of the bomb detonating next to Saratoga. The nearby nuke caused the hull to leak, … slowly. Saratoga was without power and had no damage control attempted. Saratoga sunk 7.5 hours later. And that was a 1927 ship, one third the displacement of a modern supercarrier. (Saratoga had already survived the airburst test Able.)

  • What do I know?

One or two underwater nukes in the right spot would probably take out the entire formation. Just sayin’.

  • Impressive. good for deterance for any country.

Although I am quite sure one nuke in the middle of that means no more 40 ships so in a way a pointless exercise.

Is there a line, or anything, in the ocean that China and Russia cannot cross? or did we just cross it?

  • Sharon

Is there like a line in the ocean that China and Russia are not supposed to cross? Or did we cross it?

  • That kind of reminds me of movies where they have rows and rows of soldiers organized like that and they march single file into certain death. I hope we have better maneuvers than that in actual warfare. This is just a parade of sorts.

  • Robert Morrison

Where are they all goin? Lol! B-)

  • zoomc

Chinese navy destroyer Hengshui & Xian among those 40 ships.

  • Looks like a submarine’s Cpt wet dream….jejeje

  • We have the greatest navy In the world and the greatest military also. IN 1969 I was an Air Force air traffic controller in Hamilton AFB. ADC had F-106’s stationed there. They had nukes on board which could devastate everything in a five mile radius. My concern has always been our Navy is to easy to hit with something like that. it holds the air speed record of fastest single engine jet aircraft still today. Mach 2.31, kind of hard to hit at that speed especially on the deck under radar. I think every ship we have should be subs, even aircraft carriers.
I’m sure the Navy has something to stop all those attacks though.

This is a video of RIMPAK 2016. I participated in the 1993 RIMPAK and this is what happens during them. All the Nations of the Pacific Rim that are part of NATO get together to practice war fighting and formations and communications. It happens over several days and there are ships from several nations that participate so that they can all learn to work together if another large war should break out. If any of the countries that was are allied with come under attack we are bound by our treaties to go help them and most countries don’t want to tick us off since we have the largest sea defense force in the world. The mere threat of our Navy keeps most countries at bay and even though China has a much larger army then we do, Our Naval forces dwarf theirs many times over. China has participated in RIMPAK’s in the past in small parts, but with all of our current issues with them I highly doubt that any of their ships participated in this RIMPAK. I love seeing some of our Naval forces out like that, it just makes me remember all the times I was at sea on board several of our ships and all the power they had. We have 12 active aircraft carriers and in most RIMPAK’s you only have 2 participate because the others are on patrol or at shore getting upgrades or getting a break from being at sea for long periods.

Go look at the task forces of WWII, ships from horizon to horizon. Yep the 40 shops today have more firepower than all of those WWII ships but for pure aww effect seeing 360 degrees and all you see is battleships, carriers, cruisers, destroyers, etc etc as far as one can see.

  • John Lightner

Uh…..obviously the person who posted this has never seen pictures of World War Two’s USA’s Pacific Fleet that had 16 fleet aircraft carriers, 10 battleships, 25 cruisers and over 100 destroyers.
The American fleet that sailed into Toryo harbor for the Japanese surrender had over 200 warships.

Total waste of tax payer’s money, what they are trying to prove to themselves USA, RUSSIA, CHINA bragging rights? as we all know, they just bullying them each other. they are all scared to each other. I guess China is the most powerful nation in the world, they never recognized international court decision toward south China sea claim and USA and the rest of international allies are chicken about that.

  • This is where your Social Security, schools, highways, bridges, clean water and air are going.

  • Joseph

I would almost guarantee that this video of the ships was recorded weeks or months ago when the formation was held under the strictest security measures possible. We only get to see it after all of the ships have dispersed back to their duty stations and are no longer susceptible to military attack. It is an awesome sight and I would not want to see this fleet off the coast of any of our coastal states.

  • @Greg Hickman, Some of them were Chinese ships.

  • A pity there isn’t similar high quality footage of the Fast Carrier Task Force

  • Hank Shirk (USS Ranger CVA-61)

When was in Vietnam 1966, we had a change of command of 7th fleet and had 4 carriers several cruiser, frigates, and destroyers all in close formation with the aircraft flying overhead in a special formation. Sent chills up my spine and made me wonder why we didn’t finish the war in several months.
    Your politicians at work.

Considering the Pacific has troubling Nation Squabbling going on the past couple years, this cooperative Multi-Nation exercise is as important as recent NATO European Military exercises. Yeah, it’s costly; but necessary to be sure our cooperative military units know how to perform combat maneuvering without running into each other. It’s just plain lazy to, not, regularly practice together.

  • Jake

I guess no one bothers to read or watch the video. This was the multination photo taken before all these ship pulled into Pearl Harbor June of this year for RIPMAC 2016. China had 5 ships and 1,200 personnel in this exercise. Besides the United States and China, this year’s RIMPAC included naval delegations from Australia, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, the Republic of Korea, the Republic of the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Tonga, and the United Kingdom, for a total of 27 participating nations. For the first time ever, this year’s RIMPAC will include submarine rescue exercises in addition to command and control-focused drills. We all need to get a grip on life.

  • Kiss my Hard Working AZZ
