Lucas plans to donate most of Disney sale proceeds to education
With the announcement of the sale of Lucasfilms Ltd to Disney for more than $4 billion yesterday, speculation flew as to what this deal would mean for the future of the beloved Star Wars franchise, but one possibly big winner in the deal could be education.
According to a spokesperson for the company, “…Lucas plans to ‘donate the majority of the proceeds to his philanthropic endeavors,’” which include Edutopia, part of the George Lucas Educational Foundation. In 2010, he stated that, “I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education. It is the key to the survival of the human race,” a sentiment that leads Geek Legacy to believe education would end up receiving much of the proceeds.
While we don’t have concrete confirmation that this will be the case, we certainly hope the success of Star Wars will continue to inspire children to look beyond the farm on Tatooine to bigger and better things.
