Mummy discovered when Buddha statue undergoes CT scan

Posted by / February 22, 2015

Looks like the Egyptians weren’t the only ones who were fond of elaborate coffins.

Buddhist master Liuquan, a monk from the year 1100, was discovered within a Buddha statue displayed for the first time outside of China at Drents Museum in the Netherlands.

Not only did a CT scan reveal the mummified monk remains, it also appears that paper covered in Chinese characters was placed where the organs once were.

If you happen to be Hungary this spring, you can see the most unusual statue on display at the Natural History Museum until May.

Never know what you’ll find at the museum.
