My visit to Tufts
Posted by staff / April 17, 2011The second school that my son and I visited was Tufts University, about six miles from Boston. The school was established in 1852. It has a total of 9,273 students on four campuses around the world.
This is Jumbo, the school mascot. P.T. Barnum donated Jumbo’s stuffed hide to Tufts in 1885 after the pachyderm was killed by a train in Ontario, Canada. Unfortunately, a fire consumed Jumbo’s stuffed hide in 1975. All officials could save from the fire were some ashes which are stored in a Skippy peanut butter jar with a Peter Pan Crunchy cover. (I’m not making this up.)
This was the scene in the Undergraduate Office of Admissions on a Saturday morning.
The information meeting happened in the Sophia Gordon Hall. Read what Tufts students say about the school at Unigo.
A statue in the lobby that’s bound to make you think…
After the information meeting, we set off on a tour of the school.
Some students practicing their dance moves.
One of the student cafeterias. This is where you get your food.
This is where you eat it.
Cool stairway in the student center.
The lobby of the Tisch Library.
Geek art on the ceiling of the Tisch Library.
The Tufts Green Roof Collaborative on the roof of the Tisch Library.
The “paint the cannon” cannon. The city of Medford gave the canon to Tufts in 1956. It was removed in the mid-60s for restoration and not replaced because of anti-Vietnam War sentiment. Some alumni successfully lobbied for its replacement. The first painting was to protest the granting of an honorary doctorate to Imelda Marcos.
Student food!
We went to the Tufts vs. Connecticut College lacrosse game.
Tufts won: 6-5.

One last thing: my buddies at Audi loaned me this A8 to drive around New England for a week. How cool is that? Next stop: Harvard and Boston College.
My wife is a Jumbo (in relation to this post topic) She has the highest praise for TU and would strongly encourage its consideration…and it didn’t have all the amenities that your photos revealed "Back in the Day".
