NASA helped in cage design for Chilean rescue
Michael Duncan, the deputy chief medical officer at NASA’s Johnson Space Center heads an advisory team that has been assisting in the rescue of 33 miners trapped underground in Chile. He shares some thoughts with Discovery News correspondent Irene Klotz as the men are being pulled out of the collapsed mine on Wednesday.
Q: Do you think the Chileans exposure to NASA will do anything for future collaborations in space? Did you draw them in a little bit at all?
Duncan: The Chileans, as we came to understand, are a people who are strong believers in science and technology and I think that’s one reason that they looked to NASA to consult on this very special set of circumstances that the miners found themselves in. Certainly, the bond between our two governments I think is bound to be stronger as a result of this collaboration and we’ll just have to see where that goes in the future.
