Octopus kills shark [video]

Posted by / December 13, 2015

Octopuses are cute, smart animals, but did you know they were tough enough to kill a shark? Scientists didn’t. They couldn’t figure out what was killing sharks in this massive aquarium, so they set up a camera to figure it out. Here’s what they saw:

Full story at NatGeo.

More intense animals.

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Video would be much better without the sarcastic commentary

  • This video is 6 years old. Yahoo really knows how to pick riveting stories.

  • MadNAD

I would never, ever underestimate the grip strength of an octopus. Until now, I fantasized that I can escape from its grasp, but I was a fool.

  • mwlures

The dogfish looked injured. Nose was raw from rubbing against something? Still, was cool to see life in the Aquarium.

  • Dom Kid Kie

how menacing….a 15 lb dogfish shark

  • Jim

    Old video.

  • Oh stop it. Quit exaggerating the encounter and let the video speak for itself. This is a dogfish…not exactly a tiger shark or a mako or a great white. Not a ferocious predator, but a shark nonetheless. An octopus of this size is no laughing matter. And scientists were oblivious to the fact that octopi can kill small sharks.

  • Interesting Video….extremely annoying commentary….

  • interesting Video…annoying commentary

  • the shark was nearly dead.. already

  • Poseidon

Interesting that there appeared to be several different camera angles from the supposed single camera. Looks more like a produced segment. Of course if it got out that they purposely fed a live dogfish (looks like a shark but just has rough gums instead of teeth) to an octopus, there would be protests and calls to shut down the aquarium instead of great publicity.

  • This is unacceptable, Stark lives matter. It’s time to ban all octopus.

  • somar

This video was a lot more interesting the first time I saw it like 10 years ago

  • Spongebob

    Good video crap commentary

  • Van

In the wild, animals often kill one another. A large aquarium hopes to replicate at least some of the atmosphere of the natural environment, so I see no problem with the footage or the encounter.

  • Well we all know now not to mess with an octopus.

  • Eric

My wife’s you know….// smells lovely me shark

  • lina

Yo the octopus did a dope ass rear naked choke hold on that shark..no fair he couldn’t tap out..no arms and all.

  • mark b

Lol…funny how so many people today judge a product simply by whether it’s the ‘latest and greatest’ thing or not. What difference does it make how old the video is? The content is identical, and of identical value, whether it was produced yesterday or 100 years ago. People are so accustomed to being inundated with the latest thing every day on the internet, that their value system has been skewed accordingly. “Older video” does NOT mean ‘inferior video’… take a moment to actually think before you render value judgements based on trivial parameters. It will make your opinions more worthy of being taken seriously.

  • P1nc

Yep… this is older then old

  • chris

This is obviously an old video. Also, it was shot with several cameras, by people actively swimming in the water, following the shark and octopus…it was not a stationary, “set up” camera.

  • The commentary from the last of this video fits in fine with a discussion about Isis and Islam, eliminate them !

  • The video was posted on YouTube December 14, 2009. Is this supposed to be a 6 year anniversary flashback?

  • njogerere

AS LONG AS ONE COMPREHENDS THE MESSAGE, IT DO NOT MATTER WHETHER IT IS AN OLD OR NEW VIDEO

  • njogerere

USA AND ITS ALLIES SHOULD NOT UNDER RATE ISIL

  • Nah I think I seen it already on NGO, even Humble Giant Squid ate them too

  • It was a very small shark, looked like a baby, the octopus was much larger, no story here……..

  • john

    Big octopus, small shark…duh

  • da dum. da dum. da dum da dum da dum da da daaaaa

  • RobertJ

I read this only to find out the name of the writer who cannot spell, only to discover that the identity is being kept secret. I can understand why.

  • you get a full size giant octopus and it will kill a regular size shark,no problem.

  • Lies Breuk

    This octopus aint a pussy

  • So how did the shark exactly die?? Did it drown??

  • EDDIE

The commentary is ANNOYING AS HELL!! This looks produced and staged

  • You get a full size giant octopus and a full size mako shark or great white…. and octopus will wait for some shrimp and dogfish to come along.

  • Chris

I actually enjoyed the commentary. Even if this video is old this is the first time I have viewed it.

  • AMAZING! When what you REALLY come to realize in THIS VIDEO is that it has taken the supposed smartest creatures called MAN on earth ONLY 2015 to FIGURE THIS OUT.
QUERY: What do you THINK the REALLY smartest creature on earth (OBVIOUSLY NOT MAN) says when it leaves EARTH. . .and follows Stephen Hawkings’ advice: “. . . THANKS for the FISH!!
    Name THAT movie!

  • silvermane2

this is really really old news. Me and my cousins discussed this when it was actual news like 10 years ago. Pretty sure the footage is from way back then as well

  • Jerry's Ghost Man

who wrote this article? jackass. “octopuses” its octopi!

  • It was a minnow shark very small. GK is full of BS and is about as credible as Obama who he happens to be in love with. LOL yeah I’m back Guy……
