Soma Sharan has recently been granted the key to an incredible future thanks to her winning of the Millennium Scholarship, which will cover her educational expenses from undergraduate studies through a Ph.D., but the journey of this amazing young woman began outside a door she will forever be grateful was opened by such loving hands.

When she was only three days old, Ms. Sharan was discovered on the steps of an Hindu temple in the East Indian city of Haridwar, a priest of which brought her to the Sri Ram Orphanage and the people she would call her family from that moment on. Her persistence in studying English earned her the honor of accompanying the founder of the orphanage to the Mount Madonna Center he began in California. Although she excelled in her studies, she longed for her home on the other side of the world.

After graduating from Mount Madonna School, she received a most amazing graduation present: the chance to return to East India and her family and meet the Dalai Lama, an experience she says changed her life forever. As if that wasn’t enough for one day, it was later that night she got the call the scholarship was hers.

She now stands poised on the doorstep of her future.
