Pork: The other nosebleed cure

The next time blood starts unexpectedly gushing from your nose, reach for a slab of bacon. First, eat a piece (you’ll probably be hungry from the blood loss). Then, cram a slice up your nose–it could save your life.

Doctors at the Detroit Medical Centre stopped a patient’s life-threatening nosebleed by stuffing cured pork up her nose. The unlikely, albeit all-natural, treatment dates back to at least the 1940s when researchers noted that the bacon-stuffed schnoz method saved “a great deal of time and energy.”

The team from Detroit published their findings in a recent volume of the Annals of Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology. In summary:

“Cured salted pork crafted as a nasal tampon and packed within the nasal vaults successfully stopped nasal hemorrhage promptly, effectively, and without sequelae … To our knowledge, this represents the first description of nasal packing with strips of cured pork for treatment of life-threatening hemorrhage in a patient with Glanzmann thrombasthenia.”
