Presidents need to be prepared to encounter all kinds of situations, and Nixon was no exception as the world breathlessly waited to hear the fate of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon. Just in case they didn’t return, William Safire wrote the above speech for the President to use to console a nation.
