Printed newspapers still holding audiences

Newspapers may be declining, but it’s not for lack of readers, according to a recent study by Scarborough Research. The research actually says that a majority of educated and affluent adults are still reading newspapers online or in print. Some of the findings included:

• 79% of adults employed in white collar positions read a newspaper in print or online.

• 82% of adults with household incomes of $100,000 or more read a printed newspaper in print or online.

• 84% of adults who are college graduates or who have advanced degrees read a printed newspaper in print or online.

If these findings are correct, then it seems Chris Anderson’s thoughts about this new culture of free hold ground: Circulation isn’t the problem for the media today—it’s finding a new revenue or ad model. For more of the findings, check out Media Post’s coverage.

As an employee of a local newspaper: our audience has actually grown over the past several months. As has profit.

Cows also eat grass; so what? Is this another example of media sponsored self justification. Wait for the wacky interpretations; "82% of wealthy people will see your advertisement in our paper". Of course most people read newspapers but this won't help newspapers falling advertising revenues one ounce. Conventional advertising is failing and therefore newspapers that still rely on advertising revenue are in big,big trouble. (fact)

This is one of several articles in recent weeks that has pointed out the opposite of the "print is dead" mantra. I am thankful for articles like this -- so much that I blogged about it: http://blog.psprint.com/graphic-design/things-to-be-thankful/
