Scottish brewery releases world’s strongest beer

Getting drop-down drunk just got a smidgen easier with the introduction of the world’s strongest beer. Scottish brewery BrewDog snatched the coveted brewski title back from the Germans with their Sink the Bismarck! brew that boasts 41 percent ABV.

British alcohol awareness groups criticized BrewDog’s competitive spirit when it comes to producing stronger and stronger beers, but the brewery countered, saying it’s ignorant to assume Brits can’t drink responsibly. BrewDog’s managing director added that the potent brew should be consumed in “spirit-sized measures.”

Cheers!

The brewery is correct, it's "ignorant to assume Brits can’t drink responsibly". You should take it as a proven fact, not just an assumption.

The problem is that in order to achieve an ABV (Alcohol by Volume) of 41%, there had to be some distillation prior to bottling. There just is no yeast out there that has the tolerance to continue the fermentation process up to the 41% mark. The highest I've heard of yeast going is 18%...and that just tastes nasty. So, by marketing spirits (We're talking over 80 proof here folks) as a beer, which is not a sipping drink by nature, they're really playing with fire...

Chuck, you're partly right, brewers yeast can't go to 41%. However, Sam Adams makes the highest ABV fermented beer at 27%, Utopias, and it's quite good!
