The invasive lionfish may never be eradicated from Florida’s coastal waters, but by targeting specific areas with plenty of manpower, it may be possible to keep them under control. Lionfish pose a significant threat to valuable native species such as grouper, snapper, and shrimp.
According to a study by researchers at the University of Florida, efforts have been made in some areas to control the fish by holding derbies, where divers and snorkelers spear or net as many invasive lionfish as possible in a given time period.
